Jersey's First Milk Vending Machine Introduced

A local dairy has decided to cut down on food miles and plastic waste by introducing a milk vending machine.

Classic Herd at St Peter have introduced the machine that lets customers re-fill their own containers.

It's open 24 hours a day seven days a week, dispensing volumes of one or two litres with no limit to how much you can buy.

Owner Julia Quenault says she got the idea after seeing a similar scheme in action in the UK.

"I was visiting my friend in Aberdeen and she took me out to this farm that was the first in Scotland to have the vending machine.

"It was really inspiring seeing everyone coming along, queuing and collecting their milk."

Classic Herd was also the first farm on the Island to install a robotic milking system in 2017, allowing the cows to control when their milking occurs.

Mrs Quenault says she was keen to improve on reducing waste if possible.

"We do use plastic and obviously if you can avoid using it, it is better. Our plastic bottles are of a good grade plastic that are recyclable but if there's a way of reducing the carbon footprint further that's got to be positive."
