St Helier Could Twin With Ukrainian City

St Helier could be twinned with the Ukrainian city of Mykolaiv almost a year on the Russian invasion.

The twinning has been suggested by Ukrainians living in the island.

The Mayor of Mykolaiv is in favour, and St. Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft says he is delighted to be proposing it.

"Parishioners have shown such incredible support for those impacted by the devastating conflict in Ukraine.

This twinning would symbolise our ongoing connection and commitment to supporting the people of Ukraine and in particular the residents of Mykolaiv."

Mykolaiv is a major shipbuilding port that had a pre-war population of 470 thousand residents and a flourishing digital sector.

Parisioners will vote on the idea at a Parish Assembly at the Town Hall on Wednesday evening (22 February).

As the one year anniversary of the Russian invasion approaches, Jersey Overseas Aid has committed a further £400,000, due to the worsening humanitarian situation in the country.

St. Helier will also be hosting the "Concert for Mykolaiv" on Friday 24 February at 6 pm at the Town Church. Tickets can be reserved for free online.
