June heat record set to be broken in Jersey

Forecasters are now predicting highs of 37°C for Tuesday and Wednesday (23 & 24 June).

Almost a month on from a record-breaking May heatwave, the island is getting another, even more intense, spell of heat.

It's as temperatures soar across parts of Europe, with some places - including parts of France - exceeding 40 degrees.

'Heat dome' set to bring intense hot spell

An amber warning for extreme heat came in force across southern Britain at midnight.

Jersey Met predicts temperatures reach 34°C today (Monday)

That would beat the previous record for June or 33.4°C, set on the last day of the month last year.

However, the heat will continue to build, with predicted highs of 37°C on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

The all-time hottest day ever recorded in Jersey was 37.9°C on 18 July 2022.

Yesterday (21 June) was the first day of what is expected to be a five-day long heatwave.  A heatwave is officially three consecutive days above 28 degrees.

The overnight temperature did not quite reach the threshold to be classed as tropical, where remains 20°C or above throughout the night.

However, a night's sleep will become more uncomfortable as minimums of 22°C are likely tonight and 24°C tomorrow - that's even warmer than the average daytime temperature for this time of year.

It will remain very hot on Thursday (25 June), with 33°C, before temperatures return to the mid-twenties on Friday and Saturday.

Meteorologist Alex Deakin says it will feel even warmer than the last heatwave.

"The increased humidity will increase the risk of health issues from this hot spell, particularly for the vulnerable - so the elderly and young children.  The advice is to avoid being out in the peak of the heat, between 11am-3pm."

Public Health advice for islanders to best cope with the coming few days of heat is to:

  • Cool off indoors during the hottest part of the day (11am - 3pm or later) when the UV is at its strongest
  • Leave strenuous activity for early or much later when it is cooler
  • Take cool baths and showers
  • Drink plenty of water and avoid coffee and alcohol
  • Close curtains, open windows for the breeze, and use fans
  • Wear a hat and loose light clothing
  • Wear sun cream that is in date and with a minimum SPF of 30

Most schools have advised parents they are monitoring conditions in the classrooms.

Some have said they will close early.
