Surprise flash mob launch 'Find Your Groove' campaign

A surprise flash mob took over Trenton Square to mark the official launch of a new Dementia Jersey campaign.

Local performers entertained crowds with contemporary and street dance, as well as more traditional styles, to celebrate the joy of movement, and show that there is a style of dance for everyone.

It marked the official launch of 'Find Your Groove', a new initiative within Dementia Jersey's 'Boost Your Brain' campaign, which aims to raise awareness of the lifestyle choices that can help reduce the risk of dementia.

Research published in the Lancet Commission (2024) suggests that up to 45% of dementia cases could potentially be prevented or delayed by addressing modifiable risk factors throughout life.

One of the key protective factors is regular physical activity, with dance particularly beneficial as it combines physical exercise with memory, coordination, rhythm, and learning new skills, while encouraging people to connect with others.

The campaign aims to encourage islanders to explore the many dance and movement opportunities that are available across Jersey.

Dreena Collins, Dementia Project Manager, Dementia Jersey, said:

"Find Your Groove is about showing that movement doesn't have to mean going to the gym or running a marathon. Whether it's salsa, line dancing, Zumba, ballroom, street dance or simply dancing around your kitchen, moving more is one of the best things we can do for both our physical and brain health.

"We wanted to create something fun and accessible that encourages people to try something new while sharing an important public health message. The response from everyone was fantastic, and we're incredibly grateful to Jersey Development Company for helping us bring this campaign to life."

The performance was part of Jersey Development Company's Hola Friday! event, with the campaign given funding from the Government of Jersey's Creative Island Partnership Fund.
