Jersey-Tenerife Holidays Continue

Health officials monitoring the global coronavirus outbreak have issued advice to passengers returning from Tenerife, while a local tour operator says its holidays to the Spanish island are continuing as normal.

The H10 Costa Adeje Palace Hotel is in lock-down after a visiting Italian doctor tested positive for COVID-19.

Jersey's health authorities say anyone who has returned from staying at that particular hotel should self-isolate for 14 days whether or not they feel unwell:

*Anyone who has returned from staying at the hotel in Tenerife affected by Coronavirus is being asked to self-isolate for 14 days from the date they left Tenerife, whether or not they have symptoms of Coronavirus.
*Anyone who has returned from the affected hotel in Tenerife and has symptoms of Coronavirus is being asked to self-isolate for 14 days from the date they left Tenerife, and to call the helpline on 01534 445566 for medical advice
*Anyone who has been in contact with guests who have no symptoms after staying at the affected hotel, needs to take no action
*Anyone who has been in contact with guests who do have symptoms after staying at the affected hotel, should call the helpline for advice

Jersey's Deputy Medical Officer of Health, Dr Ivan Muscat, confirmed 'a handful' of islanders have been told to self-isolate after returning from a holiday in the Coronavirus-hit hotel.

One Jersey school has asked its students just back from the Spanish island to stay at home for the next 14 days after spending half-term at the H10 Costa Adeje Palace.

De La Salle headteacher Jason Turner has emailed parents saying staff will be using hand-sanitiser on pupils after breaks and asked that boys don't wear face masks to school:

"A small number of College students were in Tenerife over the half term, they have been contacted by the Government of Jersey and advised to self-isolate for the next fourteen days. None of these students have shown any symptoms.

"We have instigated a deep clean regime focused on areas where those students spent time. This has been completed, but we will continue to review this regime. In addition, we are going to take precautionary measures, principally to reassure students and ensure that good hygiene regimes are being followed. Therefore, staff will be issued with hand sanitizer and after each occasion when the boys have had a break we will ask students to use this before going into a classroom."

FlyDirect, which is running weekly direct flights to Tenerife says it is liaising closely with the Deputy Medical Officer of Health regarding advice to passengers who have recently returned and those due to travel.

No one on a package holiday with the operator stayed at the affected hotel last week.  The company says it would not be aware of the accommodation arrangements of any customers who booked with them on a 'flight only' basis.

"The Foreign & Commonwealth Office travel advice for the Canary Islands remains unchanged and FlyDirect’s holiday programme, therefore, continues to operate as normal."   - Robert MacKenzie, MD of the CI Travel Group.

In Guernsey, schoolchildren just back from a ski trip in Piedmont have been sent home from the Grammar School and told to self-isolate.

At least one was showing relevant symptoms.

The Foreign Office is advising against "all but essential" travel to the northern Italian regions where cases of coronavirus have been detected.

Jersey's Deputy Medical Officer of Health issued updated guidance on Tuesday, along with an updated listed of 'category 1' countries.

Austria, Croatia and Switzerland have reported their first cases of the illness.

The Health Department is operating a helpline for anyone with concerns about coronavirus. You can call 01534 445566 between 8:30am and 11pm.
