Health: Get Flu Jab Before Christmas

Doctors are urging vulnerable groups of islanders who haven't had a flu vaccination yet this year to get one while stocks last.

More than 26,000 people have had the protection since the start of October.

That includes 8,500 children who had had the nasal spray.

Vulnerable groups include the over 65s, pregnant women and working age adults with a medical condition.

Doctor Linda Diggle says it's best to get the jab before Christmas:

"A lot of people travel during the festive season and that means islanders are more likely to catch flu because they come into contact with more people while they are travelling, and what we often see is rates of flu infection go up after the Christmas period, particularly when people return to the island in the new year."

The flu vaccine is available from GP surgeries and pharmacies and costs £10 for 'at-risk' groups.
