How to have 'safe and enjoyable' Jersey beaches for summer

The Police's Community Safety Team is delivering Beach Safe awareness events today (Friday 22 May), as lifeguards begin full patrols.

The events are part of the Building a Safer Community initiative; bringing together Jersey Youth Service, Jersey Sport, Honorary Police and Emergency Services.

Posters are going up at beaches across the island.

High-visibility police patrols will be at Brelade's Bay and Winston Churchill Park, but police say this is more preventative, and want islanders to consider other beach users, and their own safety as a first thought.

PC Henry Woolley of the Police Community Safety Team says:

"We don't want to be the fun police and spoil people's good times; we just want people to be out enjoying the beaches and doing it responsibly.

That's cleaning up their rubbish, if you're enjoying alcohol, doing so responsibly, BBQ safety awareness, not starting fires."

At the Watersplash from 6 pm, the police will join Jersey Sport and the Jersey Youth Service for young islanders.

There will be sports games and equipment, and then an under-18 Y-Energy disco event at the Watersplash until 10 pm.

Beach Safe messaging includes:

  • In an emergency on the beach, call 999
  • Choose a lifeguarded beach
  • Be responsible – collect your rubbish
  • Be sun smart
  • Do not leave barbeques unattended

The events come as daily RNLI lifeguard patrols return to beaches.

El Tico, Le Braye, Watersplash, Plémont, Grève de Lecq, and St Brelade’s Bay beaches will have daily lifeguard cover from the Bank Holiday Weekend (23 May).

And as people get back in the water, the charity’s advice for anyone struggling is ‘Float to Live’:

  • Tilt your head back, with your ears submerged
  • Relax and try to breathe normally
  • Move your hands and feet to help you stay afloat
  • It’s fine if your legs sink, we all float differently
  • Practise floating in a local pool if you can.

If you see someone else struggling in water:

  • Phone 999 to get help
  • Tell them to stay calm and float on their back
  • Throw rescue equipment to help them float until emergency services arrive
