Electricity Prices Rising

We'll be paying 3.5% more for our electricity from next month.

Jersey Electricity has announced the price rise, saying it is only the second in 5 years and is below inflation.

It will add around 65p a week to the average domestic bill.

CEO Chris Ambler says the increase is inevitable 'because of the fall in foreign exchange rates and other inflationary pressures'.

"We import 95% of Jersey's electricity and our supply agreement with EDF in France combines a fixed price component with the ability to hedge our purchasing over a rolling three-year period.  These hedging arrangements have sheltered our customers greatly in recent years, but the sustained weakness in Sterling relative to the Euro eventually flows through into our costs."

Water bills are also rising on 1st April.  Jersey Water announced a tariff increase in January.
