Eight people, including four young children, have been rescued from a liferaft and from rocks by Jersey's St Helier lifeboat crews.

The RNLI all-weather and inshore boats and the JLA inshore lifeboat were called at 9.30pm on Tuesday (21 May) to help a French sailing vessel stuck on rocks south of the harbour's tanker berth, behind La Collette reclamation site.

The vessel had drifted onto a rock south of the reclamation site after a rope became entangled with the propeller.

The people onboard were picked up and taken back to shore, where they were met by paramedics and taken to hospital to be checked over.

Jersey Coastguard coordinated the rescue and arranged a hotel for them.

The stricken sailing boat was recovered and hoisted out of the water this morning.

RNLI Jersey said:

"We remind all mariners that lifejackets are essential safety equipment and should always be on board and readily accessible."
