Irish actor Damien Molony will play the part of detective Jim Bergerac in the reboot of the classic TV series, set in Jersey.

Molony is best known for his roles in Derry Girls and Brassic.

He has seen off competition to land the iconic part of Jim Bergerac, made famous in the 1980s by John Nettles.

UKTV is bringing back the popular detective drama that put Jersey on the map.  It originally aired on the BBC from 1981 to 1991.

Details of the reboot were revealed in April, prompting speculation about who would get the starring role.

Molony says he is 'incredibly excited' to be taking on the part of Bergerac.

The reimagined version will also start Zoe Wanamaker (My Family, Harry Potter) as Bergerac's mother-in-law and Philip Glenister (Life on Mars)

Wanamaker's role will reportedly be a female equivalent of the Charlie Hungerford character played by Terence Alexander.

Rather than one storyline per episode, the remake of Bergerac will see one murder mystery run across the six part series.

The project is being supported by Visit Jersey, which hopes it will draw tourists to the island.

Tricia Warwick, Chief Executive, said: "The modern re-imagining of Bergerac presents an opportunity to celebrate the show's legacy in Jersey, whilst reaching a new generation of fans will be eager to 'set jet' to the featured locations.'
