Reece: The Young Blind Boxer

A Guernsey teenager is proving that disabilities don't have to restrict life experiences.

Reece Knight was born with septo-optic dysplasia, a condition that severely limits his eyesight.

Now 15 years old, and registered as blind, Reece has surprised everyone, by attending boxing training sessions.

He first met his trainer Mandy Hobart from The Guernsey Sports Commission 6 months ago during a school lunchtime session at La Mare.

Mrs Hobart says despite his disability, Reece has thrived in the ring:

"When I got a call from his mum, to say that he was registered blind and that he’d like to try boxing out, I thought I’d have to keep it all very simple and really take it very slowly, but he’s just picked things up very quickly and just developed so well – and just really loves it.

Reece has progressed from padwork and bagwork, to now doing partner work which entails moving around the ring and trying to touch your opponent's shoulder with his jab hand, while defending his own shoulder.

It’s amazing that he has gone from coming in and not knowing anything about boxing to where he is now, and who knows where it could take him."

She says everyone should aspire to stay as active as possible:

"Boxing is a great sport, it gives you confidence, and great fitness and I’m sure there’s a way we can adapt it for pretty much anybody out there.

Taking part in a sport gives you that uplift, and makes you healthier in life but there’s also that social aspect as well, so mentally it's really good for you too.

I’d really encourage anyone who is not in a sport at the moment to try something.

Reece is a prime example that if you put your mind to it you can do anything."

Reece's mum Ashley Miles says she never imagined her son in a boxing ring when he was diagnosed, but is happy to see him enjoying himself:

"He was never a sporty person and struggled with team sports due to his vision although he still gave everything a good try.

The change in his confidence from boxing has been amazing. He never lets his impairment stop him from doing the things he wants to do and we are very proud of everything he achieves."
