No Tomato Rationing For CI Shoppers

The Channel lslands Co-Op and Sandpiper CI say they don't intend to restrict fruit and veg sales despite a global shortage of produce.

Supplies of foods such as tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers have been hit by bad weather in southern Europe and northern Africa which has affected the harvest.

Supermarkets in the UK have begun imposing restrictions on certain fresh produce. Customers of Tesco, Asda, Morrisons and Asda face limits on how much they can buy.

However, islanders are not likely to see similar limitations any time soon.

Mark Cox, CEO of the Channel Islands Co-Op, says they are experiencing shortages of some salad and vegetable lines but are looking at other solutions.

"We are actively working with our suppliers to find alternative sources where possible; it is likely there will be some shortages of products for several weeks until supply from growers locally is available.

We have no intention of rationing products as has been seen in the UK and we apologise for the inconvenience caused by these shortages."

Sandpiper CI  - which operates the islands' Morrisons Daily stores - says it hasn't felt the impact of the shortage and has no intention of restricting sales of certain products.
