Major power cut switches off most of Alderney

Alderney Airport, the harbour, St Anne, and the school have all been without electricity.

Alderney Airport was part of a large swathe of the island to suffer the power outage first thing this morning, and flying was stopped as a result.

Alderney Electricity say that at around 0740 this morning (10 September) the majority of island homes and businesses were without power.

They say the fault is with the two distribution lines, the west and the east.

The power station was restarted, and the western side, which includes the airport, St Anne and the homes running down to Platte Saline was back online first.

The company says engineers have to be methodical. They are visiting each substation to power it off, then check the lines and transformers and power it up again, which takes time.

The priority now is the harbour and school.

The early Guernsey flights have now taken off.
