Fewer Than 40 Key Workers In Visitor Accommodation

Figures from the States show the breakdown is currently 18 healthcare staff and 16 teachers or other education staff.

As part of its bid to get planning permission for a large car park and 66 flats on the field at the Vauquiedor, P&R says it has permission from Economic Development to use some visitor accommodation for key workers.

In its extra submission to the Planning Authority, it recognises this is costly and helped push up the Health Committee's agency worker bill from roughly £5M to £11.5M last year.

Island FM has spoken in the past to some of those being put up by the States and they've been staying at two different sets of self catering apartments at Vazon.

The States says it doesn't know how many private sector workers are currently using hotels and self catering.

Alan Sillettt from the Guernsey Hospitality Association says he wishes all his members' rooms were filled by tourists:

"We are here to facilitate a need as accommodation providers, the season is now as short as our runway and that makes it difficult.

At the moment we have a housing crisis, declining visitor numbers, and no plan for growth. Industry operators will make their own individual decisions on whether to accommodate long-term lets. We all need to pay our bills."
