A video circulating on social media shows Brittany Ferries' Commodore Clipper drifting in stormy weather.
This morning (23 October), the Clipper broke its forward mooring lines while berthed in Le Havre.
Brittany Ferries says no one has been injured and the vessel wasn't carrying cargo.
Tugs are now working to reposition the ship.
A company spokesperson says investigations will begin to establish why this happened, but the high winds of Storm Austen are initially being blamed.
It is understood it is in the port because of problems with its gearbox and has been there around one month:
"The vessel is in a stable position, secured at the stern, and tugs are assisting teams on board.
"Commodore Clipper has suffered no water ingress as a result of this incident, and there are no reported injuries.
"A pilot is on board.
"Investigations will take place to establish exactly why lines broke.
"For now, Brittany Ferries thanks crew and authorities for their swift action in managing the incident.”
