Schools in Guernsey to close for Storm Austen

The States has taken the decision to close schools as Storm Force 10 winds are forecast for the Friday commute.

Guernsey has fallen in line with Jersey and has ordered its States schools closed on Friday (23 October).

At this stage there is no indication that medical appointments will be cancelled but people are advised to check with their doctor of clinic.

Governments across the Bailiwick are asking islanders to prepare for Storm Austen.

The general advice is avoid road travel where possible and ensure outside items like garden furniture, bins and food caddies are secure.

Following a weather lull on Thursday morning (22 October) winds are expected to increase gradually from early evening to a Force 9 overnight and Force 10 by the morning. A red warning is already in place.

Peak gusts are forecast around an hour before dawn on Friday (23 October) and some forecasters believe these could touch around 75mph or more.

Already the peak of the Storm looks like it will be around longer, with high winds until midday Friday and still gusty into Saturday.

Rainfall is also expected to be significant with at least 60mm or more than 2.5 inches expected to fall over the coming days.

Brittany Ferries has rescheduled or cancelled ferries for tomorrow and the wind is likely to impact flying.
