Alex Scott Wins CI Sports Personality Of The Year

An evening of celebration for the Channel Islands' sporting stars, with Guernsey and Jersey athletes taking home awards.

Guernsey's Premier League footballer Alex Scott is this year's Channel Islands' Sports Personality of the Year.

The 20-year-old midfielder signed for Bournemouth last summer in a £25 million deal, scoring his first Cherries' goal against Spurs last month.

Speaking at the ceremony via video link, Alex said receiving the award is an honour.

"It's a special feeling. There were obviously so many other talented people up for the award, and across the islands in general, so to be nominated for the award is a huge privilege, and of course to win it as well is a special feeling."

Elliot Powell - who stepped in last minute to lead Jersey to gold at the Island Games - accepted the Coach of the Year prize.

The St Peter's FC manager recalled his time taking over as the island men's coach.

"It was so last minute. We were really grateful to just get out of the group stage and have a medal match. Once we had won the semi-final, we all sat on the pitch at the end knowing that we were there or there about.

(It was) An unbelievable week and that's something that I'm very grateful for the opportunity for."

Jersey winners also included the Commonwealth Youth Games Team - who picked up five medals at the 2023 games in Trinidad - and cricketer Asa Tribe was named Rising Star.

Guernsey's Steve Yates picked up the Sporting Heroes' Award. He has been part of the archery scene for decades and helped to coach some of the island's top athletes.

Steve says the award was a complete surprise.

"I am amazed because I thought we were just coming because it was a sporting night and they wanted people from different sports but to find out I had been set up by my niece to receive this award is just amazing."

The Guernsey Island Games organising committee took home the trophy for the Judges Award for Achievement for their work putting together last year's games.
