St Luke's primary school is the first in Jersey to test a 'School Street' scheme that will close the road during drop-off and collection times.
From Monday (24 April), Elizabeth Street will close to traffic during the start and end of the school day.
It will be shut between 7.30-9.30am and 2.30 -4.30pm.
The pilot will run for five weeks.
The 'School Street' scheme aims to make the area around schools safer for pupils and encourage more people to walk or cycle.
Assistant Infrastructure Minister Deputy Steve Ahier says it creates a safer environment for families to travel to and from school.
“Elizabeth Street by St Luke’s School is the first to test out the scheme, following its successful ‘Play Street’ closure in 2021, and due to the narrow nature of the street.
During drop-off and pick-up time, the street will become a pedestrian and cycle only zone, with no motor vehicles allowed to drive through, unless they have been granted an exemption.
I am looking forward to seeing how the scheme goes over the next five weeks, and we will be gathering feedback from children, parents, teachers, and residents in the area.”
A survey will open next week asking people what they think of the initiative.
