Lifeguard services at St Brelade's Bay end on Sunday, and will continue only at Le Braye on weekends and throughout October half-term.

The arrival of autumn means a reduction in lifeguard services on Jersey beaches.

The daily presence of RNLI lifeguards in St Brelade and St Ouen's Bays will end at 6pm on Sunday 27 September.

From next week, they will only be station at Le Braye on weekends until the end of October, and everyday throughout the school half-term holiday.

Throughout the summer, the charity has responded to major incidents in the water, provided casualty care for both minor and major first aids, and helped locate lost children.

RNLI lead lifeguard Jake Elms says it's been an unusual summer, but a very busy one.

"With travel plans disrupted for many, people have chosen to holiday at home and make the most of our stunning beaches. October typically sees bigger surf conditions and stronger winds and although the air temperature has dropped, the water temperature is still very warm as it’s been heated throughout the summer."

Jake says those wanting to make the most of the sea temperature - currently 19C - should head to the lifeguarded areas.

"A lifeguard service is still operating at weekends and during the October half-term week. Those who can’t make it to a lifeguarded beach can help keep themselves safe by taking note of the safety signage at the entrance to the beach, going with a friend or telling someone on the shore where they are going, at the same time always being aware of the conditions and their own capabilities in the water."

The charity is also urging those still visiting other beaches to keep to their beach safety advice.
