Museum Celebrates The Art Of Making

A new exhibition opens today celebrating the work of Jersey’s amateur artists and craftspeople.

'Handmade Jersey, A Work in Progress' is on show at Jersey Museum until the end of this year.

It features both historical and contemporary art and craft, ranging from a Neolithic pot and 18th century samplers, to a huge Cosplay costume made out of recycled materials.

Some of the exhibits are from Heritage's collection and some are on loan from private collections.  Many have never been displayed publicly before.

There is a 'Make Space', where visitors can try their hand at working with clay, willow and basketry over the next fortnight.  Other crafts will follow.

A huge floral arch has been put over the museum's courtyard entrance to mark the opening.

“From a knitted Battle of Jersey to an Occupation costume made out of tins, Handmade Jersey explores humanity’s instinct to create. We have an
appreciation for academic knowledge but a huge amount of knowledge and progress comes through making things. The exhibition is an opportunity for people of all ages, young and old, to celebrate Jersey’s creative talents and also to enjoy taking time out to create something themselves.”
  - Kaspar Wimberley, curator and designer.
