Inclusive island-wide fundraising challenge asks for 'moment of understanding'

Charity Happy Heroes has launched 'One Island, One Day', a challenge asking for one moment of inclusive action.

On Friday 15 May, islanders are asked to choose an activity that works for them - a movement break, sensory-friendly workplace activity, inclusive PE session, act of kindness, team walk or classroom challenge.

The initiative is open to all schools, businesses, community organisations and individuals.

The only requirement is to take part, share the moment using #HHOneIslandOneDay, and donate £2 per person to Happy Heroes.

The charity, which supports children and young people with additional needs and their families, says that Jersey's Island SEND Review proved that 'Jersey's children with SEND deserve better' and that 'changing that culture requires everyone, not just government.'

The day is based on people choosing to 'understand' those with additional needs.

Robyn Soley is the Founder and CEO of Happy Heroes. She said:

"Something we always promote is that inclusion doesn't need to be complicated; small actions can make a big difference.

"Disabilities and additional needs aren't going to go away; the whole island must be included, and that is the thought process going forward.

"It's not just in schools, its in workplaces and in other spaces, where we can all do better as a community."
