LibertyBus replaces 22 buses in its fleet

22 new buses will soon be on Jersey's roads after LibertyBus spend £5 million upgrading its fleet.

The first of the bus company's replacement vehicles have arrived in the island and will enter service in the coming weeks.

The oldest of it Euro III emission buses will be taken off the road in favour of the latest Euro VI ultra-low emission vehicles.

LibertyBus says this is the first of its investments over the life of a 10 year contract awarded earlier this year.

The Turkish-made Otokar buses were deemed the most suitable for the island's narrow roads.

The purchase of the Vectio C represents the first time this type of bus will be operated in the British Isles, though around 5,000 are in use across Europe.

They are 9.6 metres long and have been modified for Jersey to increase the seat capacity and provide extra comfort.

Berkan Sağlam, Otokar’s Head of International Sales (Bus Division) says he is confident the people of Jersey won't be disappointed:

"Recognised for its reliable performance and operational versatility, Vectio C has been selected by numerous public transport operators across Europe and is currently in service in a wide range of urban and regional networks."

Kevin Hart, Director of LibertyBus, says the new buses represent a 'significant milestone' in its commitment to sustainable travel.

"This not only aligns with our environmental responsibilities but also enhances the overall travel experience for our passengers.

"The new buses are expected to contribute to a reduction in air pollution, noise, and overall carbon footprint, benefitting both the island's residents and the environment."

The buses feature USB and USBC charging points, passenger announcements and information display screens, an induction loop for people with hearing impairment, and camera monitor system mirrors to reduce the risk of collisions.

Infrastructure Minister Constable Andy Jehan said:

‘I am really pleased with the progress that has been made to try and find suitable buses to join our Island fleet.

"Successfully bringing these buses into service is the culmination of hard work and perseverance to overcome some of the challenges we have in Jersey with our narrow roads and I am looking forward to seeing them serve the Island."

The bus will be on show in the Royal Square on Thursday 11 December 4pm-6pm.  They will be in operation in the new year.
