Jersey Airport hangar to be demolished after 66 years

The Jersey Airlines hangar at the airport is set to be demolished after Ports of Jersey was granted permission to remove it.

The building was constructed in 1958 but has not been used to store aircraft since the 1990s.

Safety concerns had been raised about the hangar's external cladding which contains asbestos. It was feared it may pose a risk in high winds if the cladding became loose.

Ashley Maggs, Jersey Airport's Operations Director, says maintenance on the hangar is not viable: “This building served the island well for many years, but it is no longer possible to remedy its defects.

"We are continuing to evaluate how we can best incorporate the site into Jersey Airport’s master planning process.”

The structure is currently used to store ground equipment.

A decision on how the site will be used in future will be made in due course.
