Deputy calls for separate election day for senators

States members will be asked if there should be two election days in Jersey next year.

Deputy Montfort Tadier wants senators to be chosen in May, a month before voters are due to go to the polls.

That would give failed candidates the chance to run for deputy or constable on 7 June 2026.

It would be a return to how elections were held here until 2011.

The island-wide mandate is set to return in time for next June's general election following a shock vote in March.

Next month, politicians will debate the mechanism to make that happen.

Deputy Tadier thinks the poll for senators should be held on 3 May so that those who don't win a seat can run to represent a parish or district instead.

He thinks it would 'give greater democratic choice' and hedge the risk of losing experienced deputies who gamble on becoming a senator.

"Those candidates who are unsuccessful but have a good enough showing could then run for Deputy (or Constable) knowing that they will probably have to moderate their expectations for a more senior role if elected, but still have an opportunity to contribute, if that is what the electorate of their district/Parish wanted."

It's estimated two polling days would add an extra £120,000 organisation costs.

"In terms of the balance of value for money and public interest, it is my belief that the benefits of having the elections for Senators separate to the those of other Members outweighs any financial cost that would be incurred."

Meanwhile, Deputy Hilary Jeune will attempt to change the way candidates are nominated for senator.

She says they should need to have 15 backers instead of the 10 signatures currently required.

Her amendment suggests there should be at least from each of the nine electoral districts.

"Senators are elected to represent the Island as a whole – not just the Parish they live in or a familiar support base. Requiring nominations from across all nine constituencies reflects this island-wide role and sets a clear expectation from the start: candidates must show they have support from across both urban and rural communities. It ensures early signs of a candidate’s ability to serve all islanders equally."
