Crackdown on Unsafe Vehicles and Speeding Drivers

Police are doing road checks across the island as part of a 'Traffic Action Day'.

In August alone police have attended 160 collisions with 27 of them causing injury to those involved and one person has died.

Police officers, along with Honorary Police and and the Driving and Vehicle Standards, conducted one of the checks along Victoria Avenue this morning (30 August).

Inspector Callum O'Connor, roads policing lead, told Channel 103 that officers have already stopped islanders without insurance and unsafe vehicles, with one car being towed away.

"A percentage of accidents are caused by lack of vehicle maintenance. We don't have MOTs here but there is an obligation of the public to take their car to a garage every 12 months and get it checked over.

As we now move out of summer into the winter months islanders should make sure their tyres are safe and they've got the right fluids top up in their engine and making sure they're safe, as well as their passengers and other road-users."

Nearly 800 drivers have been stopped since the new year for speeding through 20 and 30 mph zones.

Inspector O'Connor is asking drivers to help the police make Jersey's roads a safer place.

"One of the key problems we see is when the weather changes, people aren't adjusting their driving style to suit the conditions.

We need to increase that stopping distance, slow down in the wet weather and maintaining our vehicles properly.

Anybody would think 160 accidents is a lot for a small island why is it so high? But (these) things can really make a difference."

Following the earlier checks on the seafront , officers will be at five different areas to carry out speed checks.

Islanders are being encouraged to stop and chat with the officers if they have any questions.
