Challenge to CM's plans for Planning & Regulation Minister

Jersey's Chief Minister is facing a challenge to his plans to create a minister for Planning and Regulation.

Reform Jersey's Deputy Tom Coles wants a delay until the additional costs of the role have been explained.

So far, Senator Lyndon Farnham has had things go his way - reappointed without a contest and getting all his picks for Ministers.

However, there could be a bump in the road ahead, with this proposal to halt the creation of a Planning and Regulation Minister, a job Sir Mark Boleat is in line for.

His remit will be to cut red tape to help boost economic growth and tackle issues that contribute to a lack of affordable housing.

The Chief Minister will ask the States next week to agree to the new ministerial role.

Deputy Coles doesn't want it to be given the green light until there has been a full breakdown of the implications of creating another ministerial office.

"There is a strong argument that such a fundamental structural change like this should not happen without proper parliamentary scrutiny and debate, as there is the potential for unintended consequences from separating out the roles that have hitherto fallen under one department.

"At present, questions remain around the financial implications, staffing requirements, and operational impact.

"...Therefore, this proposition seeks to ensure that all viable options have been properly evaluated, and that any decision to create a new ministerial role is made with full transparency, robust analysis, and a clear rationale that serves the best interests of the Island."

The issue will be debated at next week's sitting
