Artwork revealed made from the wishes of over 200 islanders

Two Jersey artists have created new public artwork inspired by childhood memories of throwing a coin in the fountain and making a wish.

Esther Rose Parkes and Karen Le Roy Harris have created a sculpture around the Central Market fountain which is being revealed today (5 April).

Is it the culmination of their unique ‘Fish Wish - Paîsson d’Pâssion’ market residency with ArtHouse Jersey.

Over the last 12 weeks the artists have invited the public to their space in Beresford Street Fish Market, which they turned into a studio-come-creative-space for conversation and workshops.

Islanders were invited to watch the creation of the piece, get involved, and submit their wishes, mimicking the memory of throwing a coin into the fountain.

They have been gathering stories from the market’s diverse community: fishermen, florists, restaurateurs, farmers and visitors.

Over 200 wishes were gathered, and each one will be carefully woven into the final artwork.

For the launch, there will be a one-off performance of the choir piece created from the wishes, sung by market traders and community members around the installation.

The launch event is taking place from 5:30pm to 7pm.
