Initial testing off Scotland but Alderney's grid may be linked to the Spiralis machine within years.
Last summer, Spiralis Energy announced plans to test its tidal energy device,known as an Axial Skelter, off Alderney this coming winter.
The idea was to see how it would survive in the rough seas and big tides of the Alderney Race.
But on a visit to the island this week to meet the new CEO of Alderney Electricity, Guy Levene of Spiralis says their plans have changed:
"The original plan was to test in Alderney and then connect Alderney up.
"What we're now doing is taking the revenue streams from Orkney, proving the system works, and then installing in Alderney for their domestic supply, and at a rate that makes it competitive with all other renewables."
Guy says the Axial Skelter is being swapped to a bi-directional version that sits under a barge:
"Each one of our power barges will be registered and certified as a seagoing vessel and we will simply be anchoring our barges in the water.
"We know they will be seaworthy because they have gone through the official process."
Mr Levene was in both Alderney and Sark on his recent visit.
