Guernsey’s Old Quarter becomes street art hotspot

Vibrant street art is being used as a catalyst for the regeneration of St Peter Port's Old Quarter.

Art For Guernsey has gathered 16 local and 14 international artists to paint derelict shop fronts along Mansel Street.

The idea is that art will drive regeneration, with visitors spending money in the shops and cafes in the area. This is something that has worked in places like New York's Meat Packing district and Hoxton and Shoreditch in London's East End.

The crew have been working all week to complete large individual pieces which will be tied together in time for the official ‘Diversion’ project launch tomorrow (27 June).

Art For Guernsey wants islanders and locals to find time to wander up Mill Street to enjoy some contemporary art.

The public will be diverted through the gallery to see the full exhibition.

Art for Guernsey's chair David Ummels says the project name is inspired by a physical and symbolic diversion.

"Instead of being an eyesore, we are going to have a very positive narrative, a destination for visitors and for the hundreds and hundreds of people working morning and night, they will be passing by and enjoying it."

Léo Dieleman, an artist from Paris, is excited to take part.

"I am really having the time of my life. Putting colours in this street really makes me feel alive.

"My main inspiration is marine animals, plants and flowers, and I like to put them together."

Local artist Tim Gaudion says the collaborative graffiti project is great fun.

"This is super exciting. It is really great to work with the artists who have come over.

"We're just bouncing ideas and a creative vibe."
