Guernsey schoolboy to speak in House of Commons

14 year old Cole Foad, from Les Varendes High School, will be the youngest person to represent Guernsey in the UK Youth Parliament.

The Youth Commission has selected Cole Foad to represent Guernsey at the UK Youth Parliament sitting in the House of Commons next week (6 November).

At 14 years old, he will be the youngest person from the island ever to attend.

This is the third time Guernsey has been invited to attend the event, which is designed to share youth views on current issues.

Cole was selected after writing a persuasive speech on “Why funding Youth Work is Essential”.

He says he is excited to deliver a new two-minute speech on Health and Wellbeing at the dispatch box in the House of Commons.

"It’s such an honour and a privilege to represent our beautiful island.

"I was on my way to my music production class, and I was in the car with my dad when my mum phoned and she gave me the great news.

"We were shouting and cheering - words can’t describe the moment.

The event will involve more than 300 people and be broadcast live on Parliament TV.

Cole says he doesn't see his age as a barrier.

"How people see me isn’t important.

"What I say is important because I’m here to speak about Guernsey and its future goals and visions, that’s what needs to be heard.

"I’m just a spokesperson for it."
