Galpin Takes Gold As Guernsey Reaches 99 Medals

Abi Galpin celebrates after winning gold in the 200m final.

Guernsey sprinter Abi Galpin and the men's and women's cyclists turn in gold performances on the fourth day of competition at the Island Games.

The pressure was on Abi Galpin to make up for missing out on gold on Monday in the 100m finals by the narrowest of margins, and she delivered in front of a packed Footes Lane, winning the 200m final:

Abi Galpin takes home gold from the women’s 200m, just days after missing out on first place in the 100m by just a fraction of a second. She’s spoken to our reporter Harry Whitehead 🏃🏼‍♀️🥇

"I'm feeling amazing. I was really determined to get that gold and I'm so glad to have gone out and done it. The crowd was amazing and made the experience so special. It's genuinely going to be one of the best races of my career. I don't know if I'm going to be able to top that in the next few years, because that home crowd has been so special." - Abi Galpin

Abi's struggled with a foot injury since November 2022 meaning she couldn't run for six months, making her return to blistering form remarkable.

Elsewhere, Vicky Hancock took long jump gold.

Guernsey's cyclists consolidated their individual time trial podium positions by dominating the women's and men's road races held on the L'Eree and Coudre circuits, involving a gnarly last 1.5 miles of mainly climbing, followed a sharp descent and an uphill finish.

The eventual Guernsey one two, Jamie-Lee Wright and Hannah Brehaut, lead the break in the women's road race.

Jamie-Lee Wright cruised in ahead of the break away group to take gold for Guernsey's women, with Hannah Brehaut in second, meaning it was a Guernsey gold and silver and another team gold for the ladies.

A couple of hours later, Sam Culverwell, who's had a frustrating pro season, took gold in the men's road race, while the team got silver. The team manager said ahead of the Games that it was probably the "strongest Guernsey side ever" and his cyclists have proved that prediction to be true.

Guernsey's shooters continue to add to the medal haul. But, both the men's and women's basketball teams lost their games to the Cayman Islands.

One of the Team Guernsey managers, Jon Marley, says the atmosphere generated by the hordes of spectators at the big venues has been special:

"The crowd, the Guernsey public, I've got to congratulate them. They have been amazing. The team managers from all the other islands have all said how supportive our island has been, and how happy and pleased to help they've been."
