Firefighters tackle gorse fire at La Corbiere

A wildfire has broken out on the headland at La Corbiere in Guernsey.

Guernsey Fire and Rescue are dealing with a furze fire in the Forest.

Green Watch were called the headland at La Corbiere before 7pm on Sunday (12 July).

Crews are battling windy conditions using three mainline jets.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are dousing the flames and the surrounding area to get the blaze under control and prevent it from spreading.

Islanders are being asked to keep away from the area, and to keep routes clear for emergency vehicles.

On Friday, Guernsey’s Fire Chief warned of the very serious heightened risk of wildfires due to the prolonged dry, hot weather which has left the land parched.

Later the same day, a blaze broke out on Little Sark, forcing residents to evacuate.

Sark Fire and Rescue declared a major incident for the first time in their near-70 year history.

Guernsey Fire Service assisted and five firefighters were injured.

An area the size of a football pitch was scorched.
