21st century revival for The Wombles

The eco-friendly fictional creatures, The Wombles, could return to television.

The Wombles was a popular British children's TV show in the 1970s and 1990s.

The pointy-nosed, furry creatures were known for recycling, with their motto: "Make Good Use of Bad Rubbish".

The characters were created by author Elisabeth Beresford, who lived in Alderney for more than 30 years.

She named one of the creatures 'Alderney', and her presence has been immortalised by a wooden Womble sculpture trail around the island, and a Blue Plaque placed on her former home.

Elisabeth died in 2010, aged 84, and was buried in Alderney’s St Anne’s Church graveyard.

The Blair Partnership has acquired the intellectual property rights for The Wombles, which could pave the way for a 21st-century revival, with new TV, film and stage projects under consideration.
