A man in his 60s is in a critical condition after being stabbed on a public footpath through Stafford Castle golf course path on Thursday.
The man had been walking in the Castlefields area of the Staffordshire town when he was approached from behind by an unknown man and attacked.
He was found on a bench by a member of the public who raised the alarm, with police being called to Newport Road at 7pm to reports of violence.
Officers attended along with teams from West Midlands Ambulance Service, ambulance and police air teams were also dispatched as part of the response.
The victim was taken to hospital in an ambulance and remains in a critical but stable condition.
The suspect is described as being potentially of Eastern European heritage, wearing dark clothing, having an average build and being in his mid to late 20s.
There is a significant police presence at the scene as officers conduct inquiries as part of their investigation.
Stafford Borough local policing team commander, Chief Inspector Saqib Butt, said: "We understand this is a highly worrying time for our communities and we are doing all we can to identify and apprehend the suspect."
Staffordshire Police are seeking CCTV, dashcam or doorbell footage from the area.

Detectives want passers-by who saw anything suspicious in the area between 5pm and 8pm on Thursday to come forward.
House-to-house enquiries will continue on Friday, while police drones and a National Police Air Service helicopter have also been deployed, the force said..
Stafford Castle golf course declined to comment on the incident.
