Seattle Seahawks beat New England Patriots after Drake Maye's three interceptions and Sam Darnold injury in NFL season-opener

Backup quarterback Drew Lock led two late scoring drives as the Seattle Seahawks intercepted Drake Maye three times in the fourth quarter to overcome an early injury to Sam Darnold and beat the New England Patriots 13-10 in Wednesday night's season-opening Super Bowl rematch.

The Seahawks were held to just a field goal through three quarters as Lock and the offense struggled to move the ball after Darnold injured his hip on the opening drive.

But the costly interceptions by last season's MVP runner-up turned the tide and ensured the opening night of the 2026 NFL campaign would end in happy fashion for the home Seattle crowd.

Maye overcame the first two picks to drive the Patriots into position to tie or take the lead in the final minute. But Josh Jobe made a toe-tapping interception in the end zone to seal the win.

Patriots:

  • Passing: Drake Maye, 23/33, 178 yards, 1 TD, 3 INTs
  • Rushing: Rhamondre Stevenson, 18 carries, 51 yards
  • Receiving: Mack Hollins, 4 catches, 51 yards

Seahawks:

  • Passing: Drew Lock, 16/22, 187 yards, 1 TD
  • Rushing: Jadarian Price, 10 carries, 52 yards
  • Receiving: Jaxon Smith-Njigba, 8 catches, 122 yards, 1 TD

Seattle trailed 10-0 but got a field goal in the third quarter and tied the game when Lock connected with Jaxon Smith-Njigba on a 45-yard pass on fourth-and-one following an interception by Nehemiah Pritchett.

Julian Love intercepted Maye on the next drive and the Seahawks took a 13-10 lead on a 26-yard field goal by Jason Myers. That set the stage for the defensive stand on the final drive.

The game started following a ceremony that featured the Super Bowl banner being raised and highlights being played on the video board. This was the third Super Bowl rematch in Week One with it last happening in 2016 when Denver celebrated its title with a win over Carolina.

The excitement turned to worry quickly as Darnold came up limping following a third-down sack by Dre'Mont Jones on the first drive. Darnold went immediately to the sideline medical tent and then back to the locker room before the next drive.

Lock, who threw just three passes last season, entered the game but Seattle's offense was stagnant until the fourth quarter.

The Patriots didn't fare much better on offense but got the only score of the first half after Jobe interfered with offseason acquisition A.J. Brown on a deep flea-flicker pass and Maye found rookie Eli Raridon for a two-yard score on the next play to make it 7-0.

A penalty helped set up the second Patriots score as well. Chazz Surratt was flagged for roughing the punter on the opening drive of the second half, setting up Andy Borregales' 50-yard field goal.

'Positive' diagnosis on Darnold

Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald said after the game Darnold did not break any bones following the hip injury sustained on the opening drive.

"At this point we were able to rule out a fracture," he said, before calling the initial diagnosis "positive".

Darnold didn't miss a game last season while throwing for 4,048 yards, 25 touchdowns and 14 interceptions on the way to winning the Super Bowl.

The 2018 No 3 overall pick signed with Seattle last offseason having resurrected his NFL career with the Minnesota Vikings the previous year.

"It's tough losing (Darnold). I mean, he's the head of the snake, but we have each other's backs," said wide receiver Smith-Njigba.

"We fully trust in Drew Lock to come in and do his thing, done it time and time again. So we just have to have each other's backs."

Maye: Unacceptable from me

Patriots quarterback Maye was critical of his late mistakes in what would become his first career three-interception game.

Maye had converted two fourth downs to lead the Patriots into red zone territory late in the game, before failing to find intended target Mack Hollins on third-and-five from the 16-yard line as Jobe positioned himself for a conclusive interception.

"I was trying to get rid of it, and I realised Mack was back there in the back and I didn't put enough on it to get it out," Maye said. "It was unacceptable.

"I stopped being patient. That was the big thing. We were really good up until the point I tried to force one down the side to Romeo. We were patient and dumping it off and trying to move the chains and we avoided a lot of three-and-outs and that was something we tried, you know just earn more plays and the points will come.

"So I just stopped being patient and made decisions that ended up costing us the game."
