At least 31 dead after Ethiopia bus crash

At least ‌31 people have died and 33 others were injured after a bus ‌plunged into a ravine in Ethiopia, police said.

The bus, which crashed in the northern Amhara region, was travelling from Dessie to the capital, Addis Ababa, broadcaster Amhara Media Corporation said.

The accident occurred this morning in an area that leads to Kombolcha, commander Getachew Muhiye said, according to a post by the regional government's communication bureau.

The vehicle fell off a cliff and 31 people died, including the driver, with 33 people suffering serious and minor injuries, Mr Muhiye told state media. The number of deaths had previously been recorded at 28.

The victims are being treated in Dessie and Kombolcha hospitals, he added.

Images posted online by the government organisation show an S-shaped section of road, which it refers to as Harego "S", where it says the accident took place, as well as a destroyed bus.

Deadly road accidents are common in Ethiopia, where driving standards are often poor and many vehicles are badly maintained.

In 2024, at least 71 people died after a truck plunged into a river in the southern Sidama region.
