A memorial garden to honour the victims of the Pier Road gas explosion is set to open by the fourth anniversary of the disaster, with work already commencing.

The garden is expected to take seven months to construct, with landscaping underway this week.

The next phase involves demolition and ground work, with planting starting in the autumn.

Details, including the victims' favourite flowers, have been added after a consultation with their family and friends.

A children's play area, paths and seating also feature in the final designs.

The aim is to open the garden by the fourth anniversary.

In the early hours of 10 December 2022, nine islanders lost their lives in a gas explosion at their block of flats, with a tenth victim passing away in hospital days later.

The government announced the site at Haut du Mont will be turned into a garden for people to reflect and for loved ones to remember them.

Andium Homes gifted the plot of land to the government for the project, located on the south side of Haut du Mont, which is now known as Vue du Port.

A memorial will be added to the garden once loved ones have the opportunity to see the final designs.
