Videos created to support carers of people with dementia

Dementia Jersey has created 12 short videos to support family carers of people living with dementia.

The free online resource gives advice and tips aimed at helping carers feel more confident and to improve their quality of life.

The films cover managing challenging behaviour, creating a dementia-friendly home and the importance of sleep and rest.

The charity says it wanted to convey professional guidance in a friendly, accessible way.

CEO Claudine Snape told Channel 103:

"The ability to reach more people, at times when they need us  - perhaps in the evening, in the middle of the night, or at a weekend - if it means they can view that online content and get some practical advice and tips, then we will have achieved what we set out to do."

Dementia Jersey worked with carers to make sure the content matched their needs.

Susan Campbell cares for her husband, and Frank Morel cared for his wife Ann until she passed away. They told the whole community could learn something from watching the videos:

"It is like an education for the ordinary people in this world.

"They need to understand what dementia is.  It is not something to be afraid of.  They need to understand that people with dementia need help."

Their message for other people with loved ones who are affected by a neurodegenerative disease

"You must ask for help. Don't be scared.  Get in touch with Dementia Jersey."

More than 1,600 people in Jersey are living with dementia.

The videos were produced thanks to funding from Jersey Electricity.
