Students' Design Ideas On Show

An exhibition of engineering designs by Jersey students is on show at Highlands College.

More than 100 children created model cars and fluid power systems, with prizes handed out to the best ones.

This week also marks the culmination of months of work to promote science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects.

In May around 700 students became Jersey's first cohort to enter the national Leaders Award competition following a partnership between Skills Jersey and UK organisation Primary Engineer.

The contest saw children from 43 schools and nurseries work alongside real engineers to design a product that solves a problem.  3 in 4 of those involved are girls.

Dave Roworth from Skills Jersey has been impressed:

"Some of the structures that they have created are out of this world.  A year ago when Jersey took up this partnership with Primary Engineer I thought it might be something that would work well for our schools but I never thought it would be so fantastic, and hopefully it is setting them up to be engineers of our future."

An exhibition of shortlisted work is on show at Highlands College today and tomorrow with islanders invited to take a look at the creative solutions to everyday problems.
