Online Safety Campaign In Schools

A campaign to keep young people safe online is running in Jersey this week.

More than 100 teachers are attending a Children’s Safeguarding conference today with visiting speakers from the UK.

A drama production is being performed to 10 and 11 year olds at primary schools across the island.

“I just didn’t think’ by Prison! Me! No Way!! and Love Theatre will look at issues including sexting, grooming and underage gaming.

“We know that smartphone addiction is a recognised condition and is impacting dramatically on the adolescent development and mental well-being of children everywhere.” – Lesley Harrison, PMNW

The performance will be followed by an interactive workshop.

A new leaflet has been designed to help parents talk to their children about online safety and where to get support if they need it.

Figures from Ofcom reveal that more than half of 3-4 year olds use devices to go online for nearly eight hours a week.

Speakers at the conference include Lorraine Glass from Scotland’s Anti-Bullying Service respectme, Online Safety expert Ken Corish, Jesscia Rees from Ofcom and Julian McDougall, a professor in media and education.
