Nowacki wins gold for Jersey

Filip Nowacki has won gold for Jersey at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The 18-year-old put in a supreme performance to win the 200m breaststroke, posting a time of 2:07.87.

It is his second medal in Glasgow after winning silver in the 100m over the weekend, and it's Jersey’s first gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in 36 years.

The teenager finished first ahead of Canada's Oliver Dawson and Australia's Zac Stubblety-Cook.

He said:

"Coming from an island like Jersey and competing against the Aussies, Canada and England - all the home nations- is very special.

"To get my hand on the wall first is very special.

"It shows I'm moving in the right direction."

Chief Minister Lynden Farnham has congratulated the champion, posting online:

"An incredible achievement that reflects years of hard work, dedication and determination. A moment that I’m sure will inspire future generations of young island athletes"
