Man guilty of rape against women from dating app he invited to his home

Today (28 August), Jersey's Royal Court found 31-year-old Ian Michael Agostini guilty of four offences against a woman he met on a dating app, on their first meeting, including two counts of rape.

A jury also found him guilty of one count of sexual touching without consent and one count of sexual penetration of a female without consent.

In early 2025, the victim had only recently joined a dating platform, after encouragement from friends, seeking to make new connections.

After exchanging messages with Agostini over several days, the victim had suggested going for a walk or meeting in a public place.

At short notice, Agostini invited the victim to meet in person at his home address for the first time.

The victim agreed to this, believing it would be an opportunity to make introductions and get to know one another.

Upon arrival, he immediately sexualised the interaction, causing the victim to freeze and be unable to do anything.

Following the incident the victim immediately went to the Emergency Department and the Police were contacted, an investigation then commenced.

Detective Constable Luke Freeman, the Officer in Charge of the investigation, said:

"Consent is clear, ongoing, and freely given. Meeting someone through a dating application, exchanging messages, or agreeing to meet in person does not constitute consent to any sexual activity.

"We recognise how difficult it can be for victims of sexual offending to come forward, particularly where the suspect is someone they have recently met or trusted.

"We hope this outcome reassures victims that they will be listened to, treated with respect, and supported throughout the criminal justice process. The States of Jersey Police remains committed to investigating allegations of sexual offending thoroughly and bringing offenders before the courts."
