Liberation to stop brewing beer in Jersey

Liberation is to stop brewing in Jersey.

It's moving its brewing operations to Somerset, where its parent company, Butcombe, is based.

Head Brewer Pat Dean is moving to the UK to continue to see the making of Liberation Ales.

The firm says the cost of brewing beer has risen dramatically, and the relocation will make sure it remains sustainable.

It says Mr Dean's transfer will ensure its range of award-winning Liberation beers can continue to be brewed to the same high-quality methods and ingredients.

A statement says brewing on Longueville Road will stop this month.

"To make sure we can continue to run a viable brewing business, including brewing a range of Liberation beers, we have evaluated the current effectiveness of the brewery in Jersey and made this difficult decision to shut the brewery at Tregear House in October."

Some of the small batch brewing equipment will also be shipped to England, where the team there will also work on its experimental and seasonal beer offerings.

The Liberation Wholesale and distribution business remains unchanged and will continue to operate from Tregear House on Longueville Road.

Mr Dean said:

"I’m really excited about the move to Somerset and the opportunity to help preserve the legacy of Liberation Brewery.

"This move allows us to continue brewing some of the best ales in the world and to further develop our small batch cask program.”

It ends more than 150 years of Liberation Brewery operating in some guise in the Channel Islands.  It started life as Ann Street Brewery and became famous for its Mary Ann beer.

Liberation Ale launched in 2009 and has been followed by Liberation IPA and Herm Island Gold.
