JSPCA to close vet clinic for non-shelter animals

The JSPCA is closing its assisted vet clinic at the end of May.

The service has long offered vet care to people on Income Support and those who have adopted pets from the shelter with existing health concerns.

The charity says its taken the 'difficult decision' to close the service because of staffing and funding challenges and the pressures of looking after animals at the shelter.

"We continually review the services we provide at the JSPCA Animal Shelter to ensure they remain safe, viable and delivered to the highest standards of animal welfare.

"We have seen an ongoing increase in demand across our veterinary services, particularly in the number of wildlife cases which has continued to rise year on year.

"It is with a heavy heart that we have decided to close the Assisted Veterinary Clinic in order to responsibly manage the current demand and ensure we can continue to provide safe, timely and high quality care."

The JSPCA says it is giving three months' notice of the closure so clients have time to make alternative arrangements for their pet's vet care.

It says it will continue to provide pets with medication via a prescription at a reduced rate, and it will be offering a referral service for one-off procedures.

The charity says it knows the closure may come as a shock and disappointment to its clients, particularly those struggling with the rising cost of living,

"As a charity we are also juggling resources and costs to ensure we can deliver a service that meets the needs of the animals in our care and the team that are providing them."
