Jersey Water has delayed a planned increase to water charges to encourage islanders to keep washing their hands regularly during the coronavirus outbreak.
The price was due to rise by 2.7% from Wednesday 1st April in line with the rate of inflation.
Now it's been pushed back by at least three months, due to come in from Wednesday 1st July instead.
The utility company says it will review that decision nearer the time as the coronavirus outbreak continues.
Jersey Water CEO, Helier Smith, says they're regularly monitoring the situation, and its priority is maintaining supplies for homes and businesses:
"Washing hands thoroughly and often and maintaining hygiene is critical in protecting against the spread of Covid-19. We have deferred our tariff increase to allay any concerns by customers over the amount of additional water they may be using as they practise good hygiene.
"We are conscious that we all have a role to play in containing the spread of the virus and the important role that water plays in our daily lives, particularly now, with the need for heightened hygiene standards. We would encourage any customer who has concerns about the impact of any additional water use on their water bill or ability to pay, to get in touch with us by phone so that we can address their concerns."
He adds that the company will continue to respond to the situation as it develops, and will follow official guidance from the Government of Jersey.
