Jersey To Burn Alderney’s Waste

Jersey will import waste from Alderney to be burned

The States has agreed for around 600 tonnes of black bags to be shipped and incinerated here every year.

Alderney will pay £150 per tonne to Jersey, and any extra cash gained will be spent on environmental and other improvements at La Collette.

Infrastructure Minister Deputy Kevin Lewis says this will benefit Jersey in a number of ways

“An income to offset the cost of operation, generation of additional electricity – enough to power 100 homes, better efficiency of the plant and a small boost to the island’s economy.

“It provides a solution which is less impactful than other possible solutions such as exports to the UK or France and improving Channel Island links.”

It was passed in the States by 38 votes to 8.
