'Grow Our Park' campaigners rally support

A campaign group is pushing for the Millennium Town Park to be extended, and for people who support them to lobby their local politician.

The Friends of the Millennium Town Park have had a stand next to the new children's playground this summer, and members have been asking park-users how they want the adjoining land to be used.

It's ahead of an expected States debate next month, brought by St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft, asking ministers to reconsider plans to use the former gas works site for a new primary school.

Bernie Manning, Chair of the Friends of the Millennium Town Park group, says there has long been demand for a bigger green space in St Helier.

"The original petition, that was signed by 16,500 people, asked for a park from Bath Street to St Saviour's Road.

"The first half of the park has been built.  Now we would like to see a continuation.

"I and the group have been talking to various people who use the park and live in the area, and a lot of them didn't even know that a school was proposed, and they are horrified."

Opinions expressed to the group include:

"100% we need more green space in town."

"It is so needed for all the children who use this particular park.  It is so busy, so yes, we need an extension.

"So many people don't have an outside space. Children need an outside space."

The group is encouraging people to contact their district deputy or parish constable to make their opinions heard.
