Deadline For Registering To Vote Set

Those who want to vote in June's general election have until Tuesday 10 May to register.

Anyone wanting to stand as a candidate has to submit their nomination forms between Wednesday 11 May and Friday 13 May.

The newly-formed Jersey Electoral Authority, which will oversee the election process, has recommended that a threshold of £500 be set for when donations to political parties should be declared.

That will be debated by the States Assembly in March.

Anyone thinking of standing has to keep a record of election spending from Tuesday 22 February onwards.

That could include printing posters and setting up a website.

The JEA says it will conduct an audit of candidates' spending after the elections to make sure everybody declares what they have spent and that they have kept within the limit.

No action was taken against a host of politicians who potentially broke the election expenses law in 2018.

The Attorney General said it was because of the serious impact it would have on the government at what he called 'an important time for the island'.

The election takes place on Wednesday 22 June.

It will be the first without Senators.

37 Deputies will be elected across nine districts, along with the 12 Constables who retain their automatic right to sit in the assembly.

John Everett has been elected as chair of the JEA, with Alex Hodnett and Ellie Sharples selected as members.

They will serve a four-year term on a voluntary basis and work alongside the Judicial Greffier, Deputy Greffier of the States, and a representative of the Parish Secretaries.

“I am pleased to have been appointed as the first JEA Chair. There is a lot of work ahead of us in the lead-up to this year’s elections in June.

The JEA and the vote.je website should be the first points of contact for anyone thinking of standing as a candidate, wishing to vote or wanting to know more about the election process in Jersey." - John Everett, JEA Chair.
