Big Moment For Guthrie

It is a big moment for Jersey's Serena Guthrie, who'll lead England out in the opening game of the Netball World Cup this evening.

The Commonwealth Games gold medallists face Uganda in Liverpool.

Over the next 10 days, 16 teams will take to court in the hope of lifting the big prize.

England's Roses lead the race to end Australia's dominance, 18 months after beating them on their own soil to claim the Commonwealth gold.

The historic victory led to the team picking up Team of the Year and Moment of the Year at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards.

29 year old Guthrie, who has won 90 caps, was named skipper in May.

Speaking at the time she said:

"Being selected and asked to be captain is a proud moment for me. It’s going to be a real honour for us all to step out in front of the nation. After our triumph at the Commonwealth Games last year the pressure is on to try and secure gold on a global stage again.

The competition is tighter than ever but it is a huge comfort to be playing on home soil and to have the nation behind us. I can’t wait!"

The Captain, who started out playing for the island and now plays club netball for Team Bath, has told Sky Sports News they can't wait to get going.

"We love being together and the last couple of weeks we have got back to that real nice family environment so we are just looking forward to everything starting now."

Every match of the Vitality Netball World Cup 2019 will be shown live on Sky Sports.
