Ban on dogs in Springfield Park lifted

Dogs will be allowed to be walked on a lead at Springfield.

The ban on dogs in Springfield park has been lifted, and owners can take them on the paths, provided they are on a lead.

The Infrastructure Minister said the blanket ban dated back to when there was a real grass, unfenced pitch.

The playing surface is now 3G artificial turf, protected by a perimeter boundary.

All but one politician voted in the States Assembly of rewriting the current ban, bringing Springfield in line with other similar spaces.

Many noted that there were limited areas for people to walk their pets in town.

Infrastructure Minister Constable Andy Jehan said:

"The re-designation of Springfield is perfectly workable and sensible, given the move to a protected 3G pitch in 2015.

"Indeed, it is legislation catching up with practice."

Precautions will be in place to ensure the area is kept clean and safe, such as the need for leads, staying on paths, and enforcement of making sure islanders clean up after their dogs.
